June 11, 2008 – Saint Clair Shores, MI – Human Products Division: The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has issued a summary opinion on four bisglycinate chelate products: Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Copper.
At the request of the European Commission, the Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on these four mineral bisglycinates, produced exclusively by Albion, and the opinion was a positive one:
- The Panel concludes that the use of copper bisglycinate chelate as a source for copper added for nutritional purposes to food supplements, and of calcium bisglycinate chelate and magnesium bisglycinate chelate as sources for respectively calcium and magnesium added for nutritional purposes to foods for particular nutritional uses and food supplements, and of zinc bisglycinate chelate when used as a source for zinc in foods intended for the general population (including food supplements) and foods for particular nutritional uses, is not of safety concern
Scientific Opinion of the Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food on a request from the Commission on certain bisglycinates and glycinate nicotinate as sources for copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium and chromium. The EFSA Journal (2008) 718, 1-36.
The EFSA has previously rendered an opinion on Albion’s Ferrochel® (ferrous bisglycinate chelate) as safe for all purposes, including baby formulas.
Albion’s bisglycinate chelates are the only amino acid chelates that have been accepted in this fashion by the European Union. This marks a major milestone in Albion’s history. Additional mineral dossiers will be submitted to the EU for safety determination in the near future.
